Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) Practice Exam

An AIS (Automatic Identification System) unit primarily includes GNSS/GPS modules as they are essential for determining and transmitting the vessel's precise position. The GNSS/GPS modules enable the AIS to receive satellite data and calculate its geographic location, which is then broadcasted to other vessels and shore stations. This transmission of position information is critical for collision avoidance and enhances maritime situational awareness.

The other options, while related to maritime navigation and vessel operation, do not directly pertain to the core functionality of an AIS unit. Radar and sonar modules are primarily used for detecting other vessels and underwater obstacles, and while they are important for navigation, they do not form part of the AIS system itself. Communication and engine control modules manage different aspects of vessel operations, while safety and emergency modules address various safety protocols but are not integral to the AIS setup. Thus, the inclusion of GNSS/GPS modules in AIS underscores their fundamental role in position reporting and maritime navigation safety.
